Preliminary Findings of the EACH-FOR Project:

Preliminary Findings

The researchers of EACH-FOR (www.each-for.eu) are happy to present preliminary findings of 19 case studies. The case studies revealed linkages between environmental degradation and migration. All in all 22 case studies in nine regions have been conducted, where researchers assessed the causes of (forced) migration with a special focus on environmental degradation. This report can be considered a milestone of their work.

ELIAMEP:

ELIAMEP report

The report entitled "Human Security, Climate Change and Environmentally induced Migration" written by Dr. Koko Warner, Dr. Tamer Afifi, Olivia Dun, Marc Stal, and Sophia Schmidl explores the relevant dimensions of human security and the challenges posed by climate change and environmentally induced migration. The authors assess how environmental factors including climate change affect vulnerable groups, and how environmental pressures may force people to flee their homes currently and in the future. This study claims to be the first to quantify with help of a “gravity model” the potential impacts of environmental factors on global human migration stocks. The study supports the 2007-2008 Greek chairmanship of the Human Security Network. A network aiming at raising political awareness on the human security impact of climate change, especially on vulnerable groups. The focus lies especially on less known consequences on population groups such as environmentally induced migration.

Intersection No. 5:

Intersection Paper No.5

The issue No.5/ 2007 of the UNU-EHS ‘InterSecTions’ Series deals with the complex subject of environmental migration. Already the title alone “Control, Adapt or Flee? How to Face Environmental Migration” underlines the need to access it from different viewpoints, to follow up the chain of environmental deteriorations like land degradation, climate change, or sudden onset of hazard events.
